After Quake, Indians Finish What They Started
Baseball returned to the Kingdome without any shaking Friday night.
Less than 24 hours after a moderate earthquake suspended play, the Cleveland Indians and Seattle Mariners finished one game and played another without incident.
A crowd of 38,086, showing no fear of entering a 20-year-old building that was inspected by a team of engineers earlier in the day, saw the Indians win the suspended game 6-4, before taking the nightcap, 5-2.
Tony Pena and Julio Franco hit homers in the second game for the Indians, who won their fifth in a row. Charles Nagy (4-1) pitched the Indians to their 17th win in 20 games after Julian Tavares and Jose Mesa finished what Orel Hershiser (3-2) started Thursday night. Mesa saved both games and now has 11 in as many tries.
The quake that measured 5.4 in magnitude rocked the Kingdome and sent 21,711 fans home early.
On Friday night, longtime Mariner broadcaster Dave Niehaus was back in his booth after fleeing the Kingdome Thursday night. “Ladies and gentlemen, we’re having an earthquake and I’m out of here,” Niehaus had said.
