A 23-year-old Oxnard man was in critical condition after the car he was driving struck a tree off West Vineyard Avenue early Saturday, police said.

Witnesses told police the west-bound car was speeding when it ran off the roadway and broadsided the tree on the passenger’s side just before 2 a.m.

Oxnard firefighters used rescue equipment to extricate the man. He was alone in the car.

Paramedics rushed him to St. John’s Regional Medical Center with head and chest injuries. Police declined to identify the man until they had notified his family.
