Amtrak Buying 98 Locomotives: The rail service’s $235-million order for 4,250-horsepower diesel-electric locomotives is going to General Electric Transportation Systems in Erie, Pa. First delivery is scheduled for September. These will replace 4,000-horsepower engines on lines operating out of Chicago. Amtrak has been struggling with financial problems, and its federal subsidies will gradually be eliminated. Amtrak recently announced plans for high-speed trains in the Northeast corridor, anticipating that profits from that service would help get it in the black.
