Outfielder Ted Wilkes, who hit two key home runs for Nevada Las Vegas in three Big West tournament games, was chosen most valuable player Sunday after the Rebels won the title.

“This is really great for this to happen to me so close to home,” said Wilkes, whose home is in Mission Viejo. He played at Laguna Hills High and Saddleback College. “My family was here for the games, and that made it even more special.”

Wilkes, who is hitting .289, had eight home runs coming into the tournament.

“I just hope we can keep it going like this and do well in the regional tournament,” Wilkes said. “The team has worked hard and really deserves this. We knew we were a good club coming in, and we wanted to prove it here.”
