White Sox Have No Trouble Seeing at Milwaukee

The problem in Milwaukee on Wednesday night was that the fog lifted from County Stadium, but not from the Brewers.

Frank Thomas homered and drove in six runs for Chicago in a 20-8 victory over the Brewers in a game delayed because of fog.

The White Sox had 21 hits.

Umpire crew chief Jim Evans halted the game in the bottom of the first inning when right fielder Danny Tartabull hardly reacted on Kevin Seitzer’s fly ball in the haze.

The game resumed 1 hour 50 minutes later after Brewer outfielder Chuck Carr and Chicago outfielder Dave Martinez took fungo fly balls without problems.

Thomas doubled home three runs in the second inning off Ricky Bones (2-6) and tagged Mike Potts for a three-run homer in the third that made it 11-0.

Chicago’s Tony Phillips, who changed into street clothes when he was taken out after the sixth inning, went after a heckling fan in the left-field bleachers, said sheriff’s Sgt. Mark Strachota.

Strachota said the 23-year-old fan and Phillips were being questioned but that neither had been immediately cited.

Seattle 10, New York 5--After a night of famine against Dwight Gooden, the Mariners feasted on Jimmy Key and the Yankee pitching staff, getting 19 hits. Edgar Martinez doubled twice and drove in four runs, Jay Buhner homered and Ken Griffey Jr. had two hits for Seattle.

Key (1-5) gave up six runs and nine hits in three-plus innings.

Kansas City 3, Texas 1--Chris Haney (2-4) pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings at Arlington, Texas, and the Royals ended a four-game losing streak.

Roger Pavlik (5-1) fell short in his bid to match the best start to a season by a Texas starting pitcher. Jeff Russell opened the 1988 season with a 6-0 record.

Minnesota 2, Toronto 1--Frank Rodriguez (3-4) pitched a six-hitter for the first complete game of his career and the Twins ended their four-game losing streak with a victory at home.

Cleveland 5, Detroit 2--On the day after his 41st birthday, Dennis Martinez (6-2) won his 237th game, giving up six hits in seven innings at Cleveland.

Julian Tavarez and Jose Mesa each pitched one scoreless inning, with Mesa striking out the side for his 15th save.
