Students, Others to Plant Trees at School

In an effort to beautify an institution that was hit hard by the 1994 earthquake, students and volunteers at Cleveland High School will spend this morning planting trees at the Reseda campus, organizers have announced.

Scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., the arboreal effort was spearheaded by Cleveland’s Interact Club under the direction of teacher Melanie Miller and student Lydia Daniller.

The idea, Miller said, is to provide much-needed shade and beauty on a campus that is still burdened by quake damage. The school’s covered eating area was destroyed when the temblor struck.

“Walking around school, I was thinking, ‘We definitely need more trees,’ ” Lydia said, noting that the planting provides an opportunity to bring students together to improve their school.

This morning, students will plant 15 trees donated by TreePeople at various sites on campus. Afterward, participants will be treated to lunch and live music, Miller said.

Interact was formed several years ago to give students the opportunity to help their communities in a variety of ways, she explained. Past projects included planting rosebushes on campus and feeding homeless people.

“I’m really overwhelmed sometimes at how much they’re willing to do,” Miller said of her students. “It’s wonderful.”

To participate in the tree planting, volunteers should come to the campus at 8140 Vanalden Ave. in Reseda.
