Here’s the matchup no one expected. The Jazz, supposedly too old, is in the conference finals for the third time in five years (record against the Portland Trail Blazers and Houston Rockets: 4-8). The SuperSonics, supposedly too young, are now favored to reach the NBA finals.

The SuperSonics have shown new poise and firepower, shooting 43% on three-point shots in the postseason. They’ll double-team Karl Malone to help Shawn Kemp. During the season, Malone got Kemp in foul trouble and outscored him, 93-45. The Jazz has played 11 playoff games to the SuperSonics’ eight; its best chance of an upset lies in stealing Game 1 before the SuperSonics, idle for a week, get back into it.
