CATS AND PEOPLE by Frances and Richard Lockridge, illustrated by Helen Stone (Kodansha: $13; 286 pp.). Originally published in 1950, this affectionate study of the house cat was written by the authors of the popular Mr. & Mrs. North detective stories. In engagingly old-fashioned prose, the Lockridges interweave the history and biology of Felis domesticus with the antics of their Siamese cats, Martini, Gin and Sherry. Although some of the information in the text is now out of date, the Lockridges’ prose has lost none of its charm, and will delight cat lovers.
