2 Girls Face Charges in Apartment Fire

From a Times Staff Writer

Two 16-year-old girls face felony charges after allegedly launching a bottle rocket that sparked a major apartment fire in Garden Grove, investigators said Monday.

The $1.2-million blaze damaged 37 units and left about 100 people without homes.

The teenagers--whose names were not released because of their ages--were arrested late Sunday and were being held at Juvenile Hall in Orange.

Both girls live in the sprawling brick apartment complex; fire officials said they had been seen lighting fireworks in the parking lot and pool area Sunday afternoon.

Investigators suspect the fire was sparked by a rocket that landed on a cedar shake roof covered with dried pine needles.
