Two-time Cy Young Award-winner Bret Saberhagen will undergo reconstructive surgery on his right shoulder next week, the Colorado Rockies said Wednesday.

The surgery will be performed May 28 in New York by David Altchek, who performed arthroscopic surgery on the same shoulder last October. The decision for further surgery was made after Saberhagen was examined by Altchek in New York earlier Wednesday.

“This is a very disappointing announcement to make,” Colorado General Manager Bob Gebhard said. “In 32 years of professional baseball, I have never seen an athlete work any harder or dedicate more time trying to make a comeback from a serious injury. All we can do is wish Bret the very best and speediest recovery.”

Saberhagen was obtained from the New York Mets last July 31 in exchange for pitchers Juan Acevedo and Arnold Gooch. He underwent surgery on his right shoulder after compiling a 2-1 record with a 6.28 earned-run average in nine starts with the Rockies.

Security officials at Boston’s Fenway Park confiscated a key chain from a fan who was using it to reflect light at Seattle outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. during Wednesday’s game.

Griffey was alerted to the situation by left fielder Darren Bragg, who said he noticed a strange glare on his teammate’s chest and forehead. Griffey told umpires about it during a pitching change in the bottom of the seventh inning and they informed security officials, who confiscated the keys from an unidentified fan in the center-field bleachers.
