Los Angeles Councilman Richard Alatorre, joined by police detectives, asked for the public’s help Thursday in finding the suspect in the March 19 shooting death of a Boyle Heights market owner.

At a news conference at the Hollenbeck police station, detectives released pictures of the fugitive who was identified from the store’s surveillance cameras.

Gilbert Sandoval, 23, is suspected of killing Jesus “Chuy” Ramirez, 45, during a robbery at Ramirez Market at 2971 E. 8th Street, Det. Ben Lovato said.

A 14-year-old has been taken into custody in connection with the attack, Lovato said.

Earlier this week the City Council approved a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Sandoval.

Sandoval and the teenager, whose name was withheld, also are suspected in a March 15 armed robbery at the Friendly Market at 2931 E. 8th Street.

Sandoval was described as Latino, 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighing 155 pounds. Lovato said the suspect is reportedly a City of Commerce gang member who might be staying in El Monte, Commerce or Compton.

Police ask that anyone with information call the Hollenbeck station at (213) 485-2942 or (213) 526-3002.
