Deputies Fail to Find Man Who Pointed Gun at Them

Authorities spent several hours Monday in a fruitless search for a man who pointed a gun at sheriff’s deputies after a foot pursuit through a Compton neighborhood, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
The incident began about 3:20 p.m., when deputies tried to pull over a motorist for a traffic violation, Deputy Jeff Cannon said. The driver sped away, pulled into a nearby driveway at West 137th Street and Central Avenue, jumped out of the car and ran.
Giving chase on foot, one deputy captured the suspect--but he broke away after a brief struggle. Before fleeing, the suspect pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the deputies, who opened fire, Cannon said. “We don’t know if they hit him or not,” Cannon said.
