An underground electric cable failure caused an hourlong blackout for more than 4,000 Southern California Edison customers, a company spokesman said Thursday.

The power outage happened at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday and affected 4,350 Edison subscribers in a 4-square-mile area bounded by Yorktown Avenue, Indianapolis Avenue, Lake Street and Bushard Street, Edison spokesman Criss Brown said.

Electric service was restored for the residents by 1 a.m. Thursday.

Company technicians do not yet know the cause of the cable failure and are investigating.
