Braude Invites Public to Join Garden Tour

Residents may visit Eden and discuss the issues of the day with City Councilman Marvin Braude on Saturday as he participates in a tour of the 6.5-acre Japanese Garden at Tillman Water Reclamation Plant in the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area.

“Anyone who has never seen a Japanese garden should definitely plan on joining this tour” of the Tillman oasis, said Braude, who represents a swath of the Valley including parts of Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana and Woodland Hills.

“It is a true jewel and a beautiful landmark for the San Fernando Valley,” he added. “It’s a place all Valley residents can be proud of, and the kind of quiet, peaceful retreat one would hardly expect to find on the grounds of a water reclamation plant.”

The Japanese garden--with its graceful weeping willows, Zen garden, artfully pruned bonsai trees and lakes and streams spanned by 18th-century-style bridges--is actually fed by a flow of recycled waste water from the plant.

With its blooming azaleas, floating lotus plants, wisteria arbor and wildlife, including herons, egrets and orioles, the garden is a popular site for weddings.

The docent-led one-hour tour, which is free to the public, will begin at 11 a.m. The Japanese garden is at 6100 Woodley Ave., next to the Tillman plant, in Van Nuys.

For information, call Braude’s Valley office at (818) 756-8150.
