The Search’s End

The police had helicopters and search-and-rescue crews. But the group of friends of Sherri Renee Dally relied on hiking boots, willpower and hundreds of telephone tips to locate the remains of the Ventura woman who had been missing since May 6 (B1). . . . Says Ventura Police Lt. Carl Handy: “It’s a terrific resource to have a community that cares enough to give up their weekends to search.”

Towering Above

Freshman right-handed pitcher Josh Towers of Oxnard College probably will be the first county player chosen in the major league baseball draft Tuesday. “He’s never shaved, but all the males in his family are big, strong people,” said one scout. . . . Other county players who may be picked include Ventura College pitcher Jeremy Pierce and Royal High infielder Brent Egan.

Hard Times

Life for public housing tenants in Oxnard may get a little harder (B1). . . . Those slow to pay their rent are now facing eviction. But an attorney aiding the tenants said the local housing authority is going too far in forcing people out of their homes. “What they are supposed to be doing is taking people off the street, not putting them on it.”
