Membership Offers Easy Access to Sci-Fi Films

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Here’s a little-known avenue for moviegoers, not just those who go occasionally, but for cinema buffs who see a lot of films.

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films offers a yearly membership of $100 that allows a member and a guest to see approximately 150 films annually at either the Norris Theatre at the University of Southern California or the Royal Theatre in West Los Angeles.

A monthly schedule that includes descriptions of the films makes selection easy. During the last few weeks you could have seen such hot titles as “The Grass Harp”; “Dead Man” with Johnny Depp; “Heaven’s Paradise,” Alex Baldwin’s new film; “The Arrival,” starring Charlie Sheen; and “Dragon Heart” with Dennis Quaid, and Sean Connery as the voice of the dragon. As you can see, these are new releases and even some that have not arrived at movie houses.

Screenings are generally at 10 a.m. If a single feature is to be shown, it will be screened at the Royal Theatre; if more than one film is being shown, the Norris Theatre plays host.

For a donation of $100 per year, your card will get you in from Dec. 1, 1996, to Nov. 30, 1997. But those who are just learning about it now can purchase a card that is good from June 1 through Dec. 1, for $50.

For more information, call the 24-hour membership hotline at (213) 298-5002. To become a member, write to the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, 334 W. 54th St., Los Angeles, 90037 or call (213) 752-5811.
