A 26-year-old Costa Mesa man who had been drinking was struck and killed by a pickup truck late Tuesday as he jaywalked across Baker Street, police said.

Narcisco Moreles Montes was pronounced dead at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian at 10:40 p.m., about 40 minutes after he was struck at Baker and Grace Lane.

The driver was traveling west on Baker in the left lane when he struck Montes at about 35 mph, Sgt. Richard Bell said. It appears that Montes was jaywalking, possibly returning from a convenience food store on Baker, Bell said.

There is evidence that Montes had been drinking, Bell said. No one has been cited and the investigation continues.
