A 2 1/2-year-old boy walking in a parking lot was struck by a car Thursday afternoon and suffered a broken leg and ankle, authorities said.

The unidentified toddler was taken by helicopter to Childrens Hospital, where he was placed in the intensive-care unit for observation for possible head injuries, said Bob Collis, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman.

The accident occurred at 3:14 p.m. in the 12800 block of Sherman Way between Coldwater Canyon and Bellaire avenues. Two cars, both traveling west, collided as one of the drivers attempted to turn right into the parking lot of an office supply store. The impact propelled the leading car across the sidewalk, through bushes, over a sign and into the child, said Officer Greg Mahan of the Valley Traffic Division.

Mahan said the car was probably traveling at no more than 5 mph when it hit the child and that the force was “cushioned” somewhat by the number of other obstacles the driver encountered first.

Both drivers were cited for driving without licenses or automobile insurance, but no charges involving the child’s injuries were filed, Mahan said.
