Contract Negotiations Between Police Union and City Stall

Negotiations between Los Angeles city officials and representatives of the police union have all but broken off, and the City Council is scheduled to discuss the problems today behind closed doors, sources said this week.

With the Police Protective League’s contract set to expire at month’s end, officers are planning a protest this weekend at Pow Wow ‘96, a travel industry event at the Convention Center.

But lawmakers said they have already offered enough, promising the union pay raises of 5% for the next three years with a possible fourth-year hike of 4%, which would cost $100 million to $140 million.

In exchange, the city wants officers to give up three paid holidays a year, which would save about $6 million, and wants the union to pick up the tab for so-called “defense reps” who help employees charged with misconduct.
