City to Keep Library Open 4 Days a Week

The city’s branch of the county library will continue to be open four days a week in the coming fiscal year.

The City Council this week approved supplementary funds to keep the library branch open two more days than the county pays for. Since the county bankruptcy in December 1994, county library operations have been greatly reduced.

The La Palma branch at one point was threatened with closure, but the county ultimately agreed to keep it open two days a week.

The City Council appropriated $61,915 for the current fiscal year to pay for two additional days of library operation each week. For the fiscal year beginning July 1, the council agreed to spend $57,995 to maintain the same schedule.

City Manager Daniel E. Keen said the city has to pay slightly less this year for extended library days because of lower staffing costs.

The library schedule is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; noon to 9 p.m. Wednesdays; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

Councilman Kenneth Blake asked city staff to look into the feasibility of adding more night hours so that working adults and high school students might have greater access to the facility.
