Speaking Out: With Assemblywoman Paula L. Boland’s secession-easing bill safely out of the lower house, supporters are now lobbying to get it approved in the state Senate. This morning, Valley business and homeowner groups will videotape their comments at a public forum. . . . The Boland bill discussion starts at 10 a.m. at the Holiday Inn in North Hollywood.

Thrown a Curve: The law--or a lawsuit, anyway--caught up with Stu Goodman last week when he was served with legal papers as he stood at the pitcher’s mound during a Little League game in Granada Hills. A league father is suing Goodman, the league president, for allegedly blocking his son from playing because the father refused to stop smoking in the bleachers. . . . The suit demands a minimum $25,000 in punitive damages. “I sell light bulbs,” says the angry Goodman. “I’m not a lawyer.”

Bear Trouble: The California black bear sighted by Porter Ranch residents Friday is one of an estimated 300 in the mountains of northern Los Angeles County. . . . A day of searching--and sightings--followed as state and local wildlife officials joined the hunt (B1).

By Design: Architect Frank Lloyd Wright, born 127 years ago today, designed several historic homes and buildings around Los Angeles, but none in the Valley. Fortunately, his son, Lloyd Wright, didn’t follow his father’s example. . . . The younger Wright designed Derby House in Glendale, in the style of Mayan builders, and the Headley/Handley cottage just off Mulholland Drive. Both are historic landmarks.
