Computer-Driven Map to Be Used in Planning

A computer-driven mapping system that can be used for purposes as diverse as analyzing street traffic patterns and planning community development is being implemented across the city.
“I think it will help all of us to do our jobs better,” Mayor Tom Daly said of the geographic information system recently approved by the City Council.
City Manager James D. Ruth said the computer hardware and software technology will provide “a tremendous planning tool” for the municipality.
Redlands-based Environmental Systems Research Institute will install the system and train city employees under a $120,000 contract. The corporation has performed similar services for Orange and Los Angeles counties, the U.S. Census Bureau and the Japanese government.
Deputy City Manager Tom Wood said the system will be used to analyze data relating to crime locations, land use, zoning and a number of other matters.
