O’Bric Is Honored After Doing It All
Edison’s Kerry O’Bric kept busy this spring.
She did it all for the Chargers this season, not only leading her team to an undefeated dual-meet season in the tough Sunset League, but also taking Edison to the Orange County Championships title.
When she wasn’t running and jumping at meets, she was nurturing one of the most promising heptathlon careers in the nation. The heptathlon is not sanctioned by the Southern Section.
O’Bric, a senior, finished the season ranked among the county’s top 10 in eight of the 14 individual events, posting the top county marks in the long jump and 300-meter hurdles.
O’Bric, who will attend Baylor, was a sprinter when the Chargers needed her to be, but also a thrower or a jumper or a hurdler. She was the county’s best all-around track and field athlete, and is The Times Orange County female track and field athlete of the year.
Her 100-meter victory at the Esperanza dual meet, annually one of the county’s finest matchups, helped clinch the Chargers’ second-consecutive victory over the Aztecs and proved she was a force to be reckoned with on the track. Her time of 12.5 seconds was the ninth-best in the county this year.
The 200 meters, the final event of the heptathlon’s first day, was also an opportunity for O’Bric to shine. She ran 25.4 at the multi-events meet in late May at Mt. San Antonio College to post the third-fastest time this spring among county athletes.
She scored 5,031 points to win the title at that meet for the third consecutive year. The mark was also the third-highest in the meet’s history.
The hurdles always have been O’Bric’s forte, and this year proved no different. A 15.04 wind-aided time in the 100 hurdles at the Sunset League finals was second in the county behind record-holder Ashley Bethel of Mission Viejo. O’Bric’s 44.76 effort to win the 300 hurdles at that meet was the fastest of the season by any county runner and gave her a Sunset League sweep in the hurdles.
O’Bric initially made a name for herself in the triple and long jumps. During her final season, she recorded personal bests of 19 feet 9 inches and 39-8, both of which were good for top-five finishes at the state meet.
O’Bric high jumped 5-3 1/4, the fifth-best mark in the county this spring. She put the shot 39-4 1/2, seventh-best in the county this spring.
She had one of the finest prep track and field seasons in Orange County history.
