Art Hernandez, a trustee with the Rio School District in Oxnard, said he will run for a seat on the Oxnard Union High School District board in the November election.

Hernandez, a fifth- and sixth-grade teacher at Julien G. Hathaway School in the Hueneme School District, has served on the Rio School board since 1991.

Hernandez said that if he were elected he would try to increase communication between Oxnard’s many school districts.

“We don’t have a unified school district,” Hernandez said. “There is not enough talk between what is going on at the elementary and high school level.”

As a Rio School District trustee, Hernandez has helped restructure the district’s assessment standards and build partnerships with the city of Oxnard.

Hernandez, who has three children in Oxnard schools, said his experience as a parent, teacher and trustee makes him an ideal candidate for the job.

The seats currently occupied by Oxnard High School District Trustees Steve Stocks and Fred Judy will be contested in the November election.
