Red Cross Agrees to Talks; Strike by Workers Averted

Union officials representing Red Cross bloodmobile drivers and laboratory technicians said a strike was averted Monday because the Red Cross agreed to a meeting later this week.

“I need clarification on proposals offered by the Red Cross so I can intelligently present the information to employees,” said Meline Hall, a union representative of Teamsters Union Local 63.

Among the issues in the labor dispute has been a Red Cross move to limit overtime and differential pay for swing and graveyard shifts.

Red Cross officials have said that a strike would not impair the blood supply. Bracing for a possible strike, the organization has canceled 18 blood drives in Southern California.
