Hill Leads Final Police Panel Meeting, Defends Goals for Chief

Police Commission President Deirdre Hill, presiding over her final meeting as a member of that board, said Tuesday that commissioners issued a set of 1996 goals to Los Angeles Police Chief Willie L. Williams as part of their mandate to hold the chief accountable for his management.

“It’s our job to give direction,” said Hill, adding that commissioners would evaluate Williams’ performance for the year in terms of how well he accomplished the objectives that commissioners set out for him.

Hill declined to comment on those goals, but a copy of the list obtained by The Times states 49 objectives, ranging from overall goals for the Police Department to personal ones for Williams, such as minimizing days off, improving leadership and communication, demonstrating a professional work ethic and following commission directions.

Williams was outraged that the goals were published. He left the commission meeting without speaking with reporters.
