Computerized Homework Center Opens at Library
The opening of a computerized homework center was celebrated Tuesday by city officials and residents at the Los Angeles Public Library’s Arroyo Seco branch in Highland Park.
Students will be able to use CD-ROM installations to access a variety of databases and reference materials to help them with their homework, said city librarian Susan Kent.
To help youngsters find their way around cyberspace as well as the bookshelves, the library has hired a homework center assistant.
In addition to reference materials, software programs will be available to tutor children in reading, writing, math and SAT exam preparation.
“Their work for school can be complemented both by the computers and the print resources,” Kent said.
The homework center, funded in part by a grant from the CBS Foundation, is the third of its kind to open in the Los Angeles library system. It is part of the library’s efforts to provide technology to children, especially those who may not have a computer at home.
“We have made a commitment to equity of information,” Kent said.
The Arroyo Seco Regional Branch Library is at 6145 N. Figueroa Street.
