Hearing Delayed on Boland’s Bill

A state Senate Government Committee hearing on a bill that if approved could boost a Valley secession movement was postponed because of the committee chairman’s illness.

The hearing was set for today, but Assemblywoman Paula L. Boland (R-Granada Hills) decided to delay it for a week or two, depending on the committee schedule.

She made the decision hours after learning that Sen. William Craven (R-Oceanside) was suffering from a respiratory infection and would not be able to attend.

She could have chosen to go forward with the hearing, but was not sure of getting the four needed committee votes without Craven’s presence.

Craven’s consultant, Scott B. Johnson, said the senator is leaning toward supporting Boland’s bill, which would take away the veto power of the Los Angeles City Council over any effort to separate from the city. When the Assembly passed the measure last month, Craven expressed reservations.

The bill has sparked an outpouring of discussion in the Valley business and homeowner communities, as well as at City Hall. The city is lobbying against the bill, though some Valley council members support it.
