WASHINGTON, D.C. : Military Abortion Ban Falls in Senate

Share
From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Senate voted to repeal a new law banning abortions at overseas military hospitals, a major step toward reversing a GOP initiative a year after it was passed by Congress. In a 51-45 vote, the Senate rejected a move to block a bid by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) to repeal the law. The Senate then approved the Murray proposal in a voice vote. The action conflicts with the position of the House. The differences must be worked out in negotiations on the fiscal 1997 defense spending bill.
