Cerplex Plans to Shut Down Former SpectraVision Plants

The Cerplex Group, an electronics repair service, said it will close two manufacturing and repair plants in Texas in August and lay off 130 employees.

The operations accounted for sales of $13.7 million, but had losses of $5.2 million last year, Cerplex officials said. The plants had been acquired from SpectraVision more than two years ago, and employees at the facilities continued to do contract repair and manufacturing work for the company.

“Unfortunately, SpectraVision filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code,” said James T. Schraith, chief executive of Tustin-based Cerplex. Schraith added that the closures are consistent with the company’s recent moves to shut down its contract manufacturing operations and focus on repair work and other services.

Some of the work from the Texas plants will be shifted to other Cerplex facilities in Northern California and Massachusetts, the company said.
