Seaside Fun Planned at Harbor Village
A mermaid, a clam chowder cook-off and a toy porpoise race will be featured this weekend at Ventura Harbor Village’s first SeaFest, a two-day event designed to promote the city’s seaside shopping district.
The event, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday, will kick off the summer tourist season and also raise money for nonprofit environmental groups.
Highlights include a chowder cook-off, whose proceeds will benefit Friends of the Channel Islands National Park.
“Swimming” in the Porpoise With a Purpose race will be about 500 rubber porpoises, sponsored by residents for $5 each.
Proceeds from the race will go to Partners in Progress for a Beautiful Ventura, a nonprofit group formed to keep Ventura’s beaches clean.
In addition, boats from the U.S. Coast Guard will be on display. Entertainment will include concerts and Greek, Hawaiian and Chinese dancers. Activities for kids include magic shows, arts and crafts, pony rides, a petting zoo and face painting. For more information, call 644-0169.
