Bail Denied for Pair Held in Bank Holdup

A federal magistrate Friday agreed to hold two Oxnard men arrested on suspicion of robbing a Newbury Park bank two days ago without bail until they stand trial.

Two other suspects--16- and 17-year-old boys also from Oxnard--await a joint decision by local and federal prosecutors about whether they will be tried as adults.

Juan Plasencia and Jose Ruelas, both 20, are being held at Ventura County Jail. They will be moved to Los Angeles within a few days, FBI agent Gary Auer said. “The U.S. marshal will pick them up next week and transport them to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles, where they will face federal bank robbery charges,” Auer said.

Plasencia, Ruelas and two teenagers were arrested Thursday morning after allegedly conducting a takeover-style bank robbery at the First Interstate Bank on Wendy Drive in Newbury Park.

They were arrested a short time later after a high-speed chase.
