The New York Yankees can beat Cleveland, whether or not the Indians have Albert Belle.

New York rallied late to win the opening game at Cleveland, then got to Julian Tavarez early to sweep a day-night doubleheader Friday from the Indians, who played without the suspended Belle.

He was not at the ballpark, but even his presence may not have stopped the Yankees from beating the Indians for the 10th time in 12 games at Jacobs Field.

New York scored twice in the ninth inning against relief ace Jose Mesa and defeated the Indians, 8-7, in 10 innings on Derek Jeter’s single in the first game.

New York wasted no time in winning the night game, 9-3. The Yankees scored seven runs on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings against Tavarez (2-4), making his first start since May 26, 1994.

“It is tough to play with 24 guys when the other team has 25,” Indian Manager Mike Hargrove said.

Texas 14, Boston 4--Juan Gonzalez homered twice and Dean Palmer hit a three-run shot, leading Ken Hill (8-5) and the Rangers at Arlington, Texas.

Mark McLemore’s two-run single highlighted a five-run second inning off Nate Minchey (0-1). Rusty Greer added a run-scoring double, Kevin Elster drove in a run with a single, and Rodriguez delivered a sacrifice fly to give the Rangers a 5-1 cushion.

Seattle 12, Chicago 2--Alex Rodriguez, Edgar Martinez and Brian Hunter homered as the Mariners defeated the White Sox.

Joe Magrane (1-5) faced the minimum nine batters through the first three innings before Seattle scored in the fourth. With one out, Martinez hit a two-run homer, his 16th, and Hunter followed one out later with his second homer. Rodriguez made it 6-1 in the fifth with a three-run homer, his 13th.

Baltimore 9, Kansas City 3--Cal Ripken homered twice and drove in five runs, and reliever Arthur Rhodes improved to 8-0 as the Orioles won at Baltimore.

Ripken had a run-scoring single in the third inning, a solo homer in the fifth and a two-run homer in the seventh. He has 12 home runs in his last 25 games after hitting only two in his first 45 games.

Rhodes entered in the fourth inning for injured starter Rocky Coppinger. Rhodes gave up one hit and one walk in 3 1/3 innings.

Detroit 2, Minnesota 0--Felipe Lira pitched a four-hitter for the Tigers at Detroit, the team’s first shutout this season and one that ended a five-game losing streak.

Lira (4-8) won for the first time in five starts by outdueling Rick Aguilera (1-2). Lira struck out two and walked three.

In the sixth inning, Bobby Higginson drew a one-out walk and scored on Travis Fryman’s sinking drive to center field. Fryman scored on Cecil Fielder’s single.
