Probe of Police Shootings of Latinos Urged

Share

About 50 protesters, including families of people killed by police officers, demonstrated Tuesday in front of the Criminal Courts Building, charging that the Los Angeles district attorney’s office has failed to prosecute those officers.

Displaying three black coffins imprinted with the names of 30 slain Latinos, the protesters marched from the courthouse to the Hall of Administration to demand that an independent commission or independent prosecutor investigate all officer-involved shootings of civilians.

“We want justice,” said Patricia Ramirez, 39, who said her 23-year-old nephew was killed by Los Angeles police officers earlier this year in Northridge.

Calling themselves the Coalition for Victims of Police Violence, the protesters said Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti is sending a message to the public that “you can kill a Latino.”
