A new city budget that is about $98,000 higher than last year’s has been unanimously approved by the City Council.

The council on Tuesday night voted for a $1.913-million budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1.

City Manager Fred Maley noted that through various savings, the city actually is expected to end the current fiscal year on Sunday with total expenditures of about $1.7 million, about $77,000 less than budgeted.

The new 1996-97 budget includes $245,000 for capital projects. These include spending $100,000 to buy the right-of-way for the long-planned widening of Loma Street and $125,000 for an addition to the Civic Building at 17855 Santiago Blvd.

Maley said that all of the money for the Loma Street work is expected to come from the Orange County Transportation Authority.

Street maintenance and sidewalk repairs receive special emphasis in the city’s new budget. The council last year earmarked $130,000 for streets and sidewalks, but the budget for 1996-97 calls for spending $165,000.
