Carroll’s Allegiances Put to Test

Share

The current series against the Bakersfield Blaze has been a little weird for JetHawk outfielder Doug Carroll, who spent nearly all of the first half with Bakersfield, on loan from the Mariner organization.

“I have a lot of friends over there,” he said. “You respect guys over there who play hard because it’s such a tough situation to be in.”

A co-op team, Bakersfield is composed of players who are spare parts from other organizations. As a result the team has lost two-thirds of its games.

Carroll said he has shared some scouting advice on the Blaze with his JetHawk teammates, just as he did with Blaze teammates in games against the JetHawks in the first half.

“I do it in a fair way,” he said. “I don’t tell them the signs or anything.”

Relief pitcher Tom Szimanski, who has a shoulder impingement, will play catch today. The JetHawks are hoping to nurse Szimanski back to health without placing him on the disabled list. He last pitched Friday night. . . .

The JetHawks are playing with no backups at second base, third base or shortstop. Second baseman Chris Dean will be out another week after suffering a hamstring pull Sunday. The Mariners have a systemwide shortage of infielders because of injuries, so none could be spared to replace Dean on the JetHawk roster.
