A 65-year-old Buena Park woman was struck by a motorist and fatally injured Wednesday night as she crossed a street with her husband, son and 12-year-old grandson, police said.

Francisca Barrios Gutierrez and her family were crossing Stanton Avenue at 4th Street in the crosswalk when the accident occurred shortly after 9 p.m., police said.

The driver, a 21-year-old Fullerton man, told police he did not see the family until the last second. Police said the driver slammed on his brakes but struck Gutierrez. The other family members escaped injury.

Gutierrez was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where she died of head injuries Thursday shortly after midnight, Police Lt. Tom Lucenti said.

Lucenti said the driver was interviewed, then released. “He just simply did not see them until the last second,” he said.

There is no traffic signal at the crosswalk, but Lucenti said the intersection is well lit.
