WASHINGTON, D.C. : Senate Approves Anti-Terrorism Bill

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Senate unanimously passed legislation allowing the military to train law enforcement agencies to deal with terrorism involving nuclear, chemical or biological weapons. The measure was offered as an amendment to the pending 1997 defense authorization bill. The 96-0 vote follows the terrorist truck bombing in Saudi Arabia that killed 19 Americans. But the measure stemmed from a series of congressional hearings in which law enforcement officials said they had neither the equipment nor the know-how to deal with terrorist acts, such as the gas attacks in Japan’s subways.
