NEW PASTOR: On July 7, Father Anthony...

NEW PASTOR: On July 7, Father Anthony Dummer will celebrate his first Sunday Mass as new pastor of St. Ferdinand’s Catholic Church in San Fernando. Dummer, a member of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate Order, formerly served as an associate at Mary Immaculate Church in Pacoima. He replaces Father David Ullrich who became a provincial superior of the Oblates’ Western region, which covers several Western states and Baja California, Mexico.

CONVENTION: The B’nai B’rith International’s Western district will have its annual convention, themed “The Commitment Continues,” July 7-10 at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills. The convention is expected to attract 250 delegates plus their spouses from the organization’s District Four, which encompasses 10 Western states and British Columbia. Dan Mariaschin, director of the group’s Center for Public Policy, will speak Sunday evening on “The Future of the Jewish People in the United States” and on Monday night, B’nai B’rith President Tommy Baer will speak about the future of the organization. District Four recently started a fund to help rebuild black churches burned in the South. Founded in 1843, B’nai B’rith International is the world’s largest Jewish organization, with more than 500,000 members worldwide. (213) 487-7510.

QUESTION OF SAINTHOOD: The subject of whether the late Father Patrick Peyton should be declared a saint will be addressed at a Catholic Community luncheon Wednesday at Barone’s restaurant, 10123 Riverside Drive, Toluca Lake. Peyton, who died in 1992 at 83, is best remembered for his slogan: “The family that prays together, stays together” and his rosary crusades, which drew thousands. The guest speaker will be Father Leo Polselli, president of Family Rosary/Family Theater, which Peyton founded. Cost is $9 per person. Reservations are requested by Monday. (818) 784-1960.

FLAG RAISING: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will sponsor the 3rd Annual 4th of July Community Flag Raising Ceremony at 8 a.m. Thursday at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, 23287 Sierra Highway, Santa Clarita. Santa Clarita Mayor Carl Boyer will be the keynote speaker. A patriotic musical presentation will be given by the Primary Children’s Choir along with the group Tapestry. A CAPPELLA SINGERS: A six-member a cappella group from Bethel College in St. Paul, Minn., will visit the First Baptist Church of Reseda on July 7. The Bethel Connection will combine vocals with scenes and monologues at the 10:30 a.m. service. For the finale, the group will join with the choir, Seniors Choir and guest soloist Blake Ewing for a rendition of “God Bless America.” The church is located at 18644 Sherman Way, Reseda.
