Surin Upstages Field in 100

Canadian Bruny Surin beat the Olympic and world champions in winning the 100 meters at the Gaz de France Grand Prix meet Friday in Paris.

Surin was timed in 10.03 seconds, edging Canadian teammate and world champion Donovan Bailey, second in 10.04. Olympic gold medalist Linford Christie of Britain was third in 10.05, followed by American Jon Drummond in 10.08.

Drummond was followed by UCLA’s Ato Boldon of Trinidad and Tobago in 10.09. Leroy Burrell, the world record-holder, was sixth in 10.13.

Christie said he will decide Monday whether to compete at the Atlanta Olympics.

Frankie Fredericks of Namibia, who has the year’s fastest time of 9.87, decided to run the 200 and won easily in 19.95 into a wind.

Tonya Buford beat American teammate and world record-holder Kim Batten in the women’s 400 hurdles at 53.54, the best time of the season.

Another year’s best was set in the men’s 400 hurdles as Derrick Adkins won in 47.70, bettering the 47.98 that Bryan Bronson ran in beating him at the U.S. Olympic trials. Bronson was third in 48.37 Friday. American Mark Crear won the 110 hurdles in 13.09.

Bob Kempainen, the top American qualifier for the Olympic marathon, will decide July 12 whether severe knee pain will keep him out of the Games. Kempainen’s agent, Bob Wood, said his knees have improved.

Saying it showed no reasonable cause of action, the High Court in London rejected a move by the British Athletics Federation to block a damage suit filed by 800-meter runner Diane Modahl, who is claiming compensation for the $720,000 of legal and medical costs she spent in her successful campaign to get a 1994 drug suspension lifted.
