Volunteers Help Flag Project Fly on Main Street

Before the break of dawn Monday, five volunteers from the Ventura Jaycees and a handful of town employees were out preparing downtown for the Fourth of July.

The group posted more than 70 American flags on street lights on Main Street between Ash Street and where Main meets Thompson Boulevard. Few residents saw the volunteers, who started their work at 4:15 a.m. and were done by 6:15 a.m. The flags, which will remain up for two weeks, were donated by the American Legion in Ventura.

The flag raising used to be sponsored by the city, but budget cuts made a volunteer effort necessary, said Roger Hayes of the Jaycees.

“Putting the flags up beautifies Main Street and gets it ready for the Fourth of July,” Hayes said.

“We wanted to show the community what volunteers can do if they put their minds to it.

“It was a lot of fun,” he added. “The only hard part was getting up so early.”
