$1,000 Awarded to Arts Program

Extending a helping hand to low-income children in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles City Councilman Hal Bernson on Monday made a $1,000 grant to a summer arts program.

Administered by Mission College’s summer community extension program, the nine classes will begin Monday. Subjects include creative writing, acting, singing, folklorico dancing, drawing and sketching, ballet and creative dance, hip-hop dancing, comic books and piano.

“These classes will provide a means of expression vital to a well-rounded education,” Bernson said, adding that the Northeast Valley Arts Council, in collaboration with the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, will use the funds provided through his personal grant to offer a limited number of sponsorships for children interested in the arts.

The idea, said Margaret Tollefson, president of the arts council, is to give low-income children an opportunity to experience the arts that they might not otherwise have.

The classes, intended for children under the age of 13, will be held at Granada Hills High School and the Century Gallery in Sylmar. The cost is $29 to $49 per class and financial assistance is also available.
