Jeff Horton, a member of the Los Angeles Unified School Board for five years, was elected Monday to a one-year term as president of the board, which oversees operations of the nation’s second-largest school district.

During his time on the board, Horton--the first openly gay elected official in Los Angeles--has championed AIDS education and prevention programs in the district, and initiated adoption of its comprehensive multicultural and human relations instruction plan.

School board--An article in Monday’s Times failed to fully describe the district represented by Jeff Horton, president of the Los Angeles Unified School District board. District 3 extends from just west of downtown through the northern portion of North Hollywood and from the Golden State Freeway east of Dodger Stadium through the Wilshire corridor.

An advocate of LEARN, the district’s educational reform program, Horton said one of his top priorities during the coming year will be to expand LEARN to additional schools.

Horton said he also plans to actively push for passage of a $2.4-billion bond measure that will appear on the November ballot to raise funds for the maintenance and construction of local schools.

A teacher at Crenshaw High for 15 years, Horton represents an area that includes Hollywood, Mid-Wilshire, Silver Lake, Echo Park, Koreatown and downtown Los Angeles.
