Sheriff, District Attorney to Join Fight Against State Pot Initiative
Orange County’s two top law enforcement officials are to appear in Sacramento today to fire the first political salvo against a ballot initiative that would legalize marijuana for medical uses.
Sheriff Brad Gates and Dist. Atty. Michael R. Capizzi will join a coalition of law enforcement officials, health-care professionals and activists expected to announce a statewide campaign against the initiative set for the November ballot.
Supporters say the initiative would allow patients--such as those with glaucoma or undergoing chemotherapy--to exploit the medicinal benefits of marijuana. However, opponents say the language of the initiative is vague and could weaken or circumvent existing drug laws.
Both Orange County officials joined the coalition as leaders of statewide interests. Gates is the chairman of Citizens for a Drug-Free California, while Capizzi is president of the California District Attorneys Assn.
