Hootenanny ’96 at Oak Canyon Ranch is geared to music fans who crave rock ‘n’ roll that has a strong sense of roots. There will be roots aplenty at this festival, from the shade trees that dot its park-like setting to the 10 acts that will play on two adjacent stages during seven hours of nonstop music.

Rock Hall of Famer Jerry Lee Lewis and O.C. punk eminences Social Distortion (playing their first area concert in more than a year) head a bill that also includes such established acts as the Supersuckers, the Blasters, Southern Culture on the Skids, the Paladins and James Intveld. The day’s up-and-comers are the Sun Demons, Custom Made Scare and Los Infernos.

Art

Indian humor? Uh, didn’t we get beyond those terrible old wampum jokes long ago? Well, yes and no. An exhibit at the Fullerton Museum Center is crammed full of art by Native Americans who take a wry look at the stereotypes that still surround their culture.

While some of the work is rather primly P.C., other pieces are likely to coax smiles and laughs from viewers open to seeing their preconceptions skewered. Curated by Sara Bates, a Cherokee from Oklahoma, the show includes both traditional and contemporary approaches to a wide range of media.

Music

Forget about the movie. Celebrate Independence Day with the Pacific Symphony at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre. The Santa Ana-based orchestra opens its ninth summer season at the outdoor amphitheater with its traditional “Spirit of America” concert, plus the usual fireworks.

Guest conductor David Bishop leads the band in music by Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, George M. Cohan, John Philip Sousa and Louis Moreau Gottschalk (as arranged by master orchestrator Hersey Key). Baritone Jubilant Sykes and singer-dancer Jason Graae are the soloists.

Comedy

Rocky LaPorte’s road to stand-up comedy was just that. As a former truck driver, the Brooklyn native saw more than his share of highways and byways as he guided an 18-wheeler around Chicago and occasionally cross-country, stopping to take notes when something struck him as funny.

Since moving west in 1993, LaPorte has refined his material into a rock-steady routine, including a great story about how a sea gull with an attitude once flipped him the wing.
