25-Acre Brush Fire in Glendale Is Contained

A fire burned more than 25 acres of brush in Glendale and kept at least 80 firefighters from four fire departments busy Thursday afternoon, but caused no injuries or property damage before being contained, fire officials said.

The 1:42 p.m. blaze started in the canyon above the Brand Library at 1601 W. Mountain St. It apparently started in some dense, dry vegetation near a road that traverses the canyon and came within 1,000 feet of a house, said Glendale Fire Marshal Dave Starr.

But light prevailing winds pushed the flames up a hill and away from the library and nearby homes, he said.

“Had we had Santa Ana-type winds, we would have seen serious trouble,” Starr said.

Starr said investigators think the fire was set purposely, but have no arson suspect.

Firefighters from Burbank, Glendale, Los Angeles County and Pasadena battled the fire for almost four hours before bringing it under control about 5:30 p.m.
