Small Gasoline Spill Closes Part of Street

A vapor recovery line on a gasoline truck sprang a leak Friday morning, spilling 15 gallons of unleaded fuel on a midtown Ventura street, city fire officials said.

The spill occurred at 9:45 a.m. at the Arco station at Main Street and Loma Vista Road, Battalion Chief Kevin Rennie said.

The vapor recovery line started leaking while unleaded fuel was being pumped from a tanker truck into an underground tank, spilling the gasoline on the ground, Rennie said.

Station employees tried to wash the gasoline down the Main Street gutter using water, Rennie said. It got as far as South Evergreen Drive, about one block west of the station.

Like oil, he said, “gas and water don’t mix.”

One lane of Main Street was closed to allow employees to clean up the spill. Rennie said firefighters sprayed foam on the spill to diffuse the vapors.

Because the spill was small, it was not necessary to call in the hazardous materials team, he said.

Rennie said the spill did not get into the city’s sewer system.

“Fortunately there were no drains [the spill] came in contact with,” he said.
