JetHawks Change Shirts and Luck, 6-2

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Interesting that the JetHawks followed up a forgetful loss with a memorable victory.

Must have been the purple jerseys.

Correctly sensing the need to shake things up, the JetHawks wore their road jerseys at home for only the second time this season.

The ploy worked as the JetHawks downed Stockton, 6-2, before 4,750 spectators Friday night at the Hangar.

Not 24 hours after the JetHawks lost to Stockton for the seventh time in a row, catcher Andy Augustine approached Manager Dave Brundage before the game and requested that the team wear road jerseys.

“There’s all kind of superstition in baseball,” Brundage said. “Sometimes they like to switch it up. It’s kind of funny.”

Pitcher Trey Moore all but erased Sunday’s poor outing against High Desert--five earned runs in three innings--and allowed two runs in eight innings Friday night.

Too bad he wasn’t completely healthy.

“I didn’t really feel good out there,” said Moore (3-2). “I felt tight . . . out of sync. I felt a catch in my back during stretching and every once in a while it would catch and I’d lose my breath.”

The JetHawks (10-7) made sure they weren’t left sucking wind, as they were Thursday night when Stockton (9-8) scored three runs in the ninth inning for a 10-9 victory.

“It was heartbreaking, to say the least,” said Moore, who was an inning away from pitching his first complete game with the JetHawks. “It’s always good to come back with a good win.”

Shane Monahan supplied most of the offense. He scored three runs, singled twice and smacked a home run in the third inning that put the JetHawks up, 2-1.

He singled and later scored on Ricky Jordan’s fielder’s choice in the seventh as the JetHawks went up, 6-2.

Since moving to the leadoff spot two weeks ago, Monahan has hit four home runs.

Scott Smith had a pair of doubles, one in the fourth and one in the sixth, and scored each time on a single by James Clifford.

The only question that remained had to do with which jersey would show up for Saturday’s rematch.

“It’s all in the purple,” Brundage said. “I don’t think the guys will want to wear the other ones.”
