A 31-year-old Oxnard woman was being held at the Ventura County Jail on Saturday in lieu of $250,000 bail after allegedly shooting and killing her husband the night before.

Edna Reyes was arrested on suspicion of murder after allegedly firing a handgun at her 31-year-old husband, striking him in the chest, police officials said. Martin Reyes Valencia was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident occurred just moments after Oxnard police officers had left the couple’s residence at Mira Loma Apartments, where they had been summoned by neighbors concerned about a loud domestic dispute.

As the two officers returned to their cars, Edna Reyes reportedly grabbed a handgun and went after her husband. The shooting occurred about 8:30 p.m., roughly 25 minutes after police arrived.

“As the officers were leaving, the wife produces a handgun from somewhere and fires a couple of rounds at her husband,” Senior Deputy Coroner Craig Stevens said. “They were just getting into the cars and looked up, and the wife had come back out of the apartment and she raised the revolver.”

Police took the gun away from Reyes and called paramedics, authorities said. Paramedics were unable to revive the husband, Stevens said. The couple, who were married but living apart, had three children. Police did not disclose the whereabouts of the children at the time of the shooting.
