A man who allegedly kicked a 2-month-old kitten, sending the animal flying 54 feet through the air, has been charged with cruelty to animals, Police Sgt. Paul McInerny said Sunday.

Police said Charles Alfred Gieselbreth, 41, of Anaheim is being held at the James A. Musick Branch Jail in Irvine in lieu of $10,510 bail. He is to be arraigned today at Municipal Court in Westminster.

The incident happened Friday on Harbor Boulevard south of Lampson Avenue, McInerny said.

Gieselbreth reportedly approached a small, gray kitten on the sidewalk and kicked it. Police Officer Bob Bowers, who witnessed the incident, said the animal landed 54 feet away.

Bowers arrested Gieselbreth, then drove the injured animal to the Orange County Emergency Pet Clinic. The kitten, apparently a stray, was later transferred to Orange County Animal Control.

McInerny said the kitten appeared to be in good condition when taken to the pet clinic.

Anyone interested in adopting the kitten is asked to call Animal Control at (714) 935-7419 and refer to control number A19694.
